18 years of success!
Finally, the school comes home! The 19th year of Maria Rooth Summer Hockey School (MR SHS) will take place in Maria’s hometown, Ängelholm. The school will be hosted at Catena Arena, and both weeks will offer boarding accommodations in the arena’s suites and other spaces. The school is open for all girls to register.
MR SHS started in Wallenstamshallen in Gothenburg (2006), where we stayed for two years before moving to Tjörn for four years, and then Halmstad for 12 years. The school is one of Sweden’s and the world’s largest hockey schools for girls, which we are immensely proud of. The school’s concept remains the same: all students will be seen and learn as much as possible about the technical foundations of hockey. Students also get to be close to their idols, as all groups are led by female role models within women’s hockey. Last but not least, they will meet many new friends.
Catena Arena holds over 6,300 spectators and offers a total of three ice surfaces, a shooting ramp, a large gym, football fields, and a hockey shop, to name a few features.
Own camping! For the first time, we will offer “Rooth’s Camping,” located right outside the arena for parents with caravans or motorhomes. The cost is approximately 300-350 SEK per night.
A full-packed week
The school is, as always, only for girls! I, Maria Rooth, am one of the on-ice instructors, and I am assisted by national team players/SDHL players and other skilled leaders. We also have guest coaches every day who conduct sessions with the girls. After spending a year as a college coach at the highest level, I have gained knowledge from, in my opinion, one of the world’s best coaches: Shannon Miller. If anyone knows what it takes to reach the top as a coach, it’s her! She won 5 American championships as the coach for UMD (3 of which were during my time as a player at the school). Much of what I have learned permeates the training and our mindset.
It will be a packed week with hockey girls of various ages and from many countries. Ice sessions, internal matches, physical training sessions, new friends, lifelong memories, and a lot of other fun are included! Registration takes place on Sunday afternoon. Activities run from approximately 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM on days 2-6 of the camp (excluding the start and final days). Each group will have at least one internal match and another on-ice activity in the evening. The school ends with an internal match and an awards ceremony.
Goalkeepers will have specialized sessions with highly skilled goalie coaches during the week. All goalkeepers also attend the camp at a reduced price.
Group placement depends on the number of registered students and their individual knowledge and experience. Groups may be adjusted after the first day in consultation with the coaches and the student.
Each day includes at least two ice sessions, one to two physical training sessions, and one theory session or other activity.
We offer varied training where you will receive personal help with the areas you need to improve. The school draws inspiration from Sweden, the USA, and Canada – the homeland of hockey.
During the weeks, we will have surprise guests, each with a unique background in hockey or other sports. We hope they will inspire you to pursue sports.

The school's guests throughout the year.
We welcomed 272 students to the school—amazing! As always, we had incredible students, supported by outstanding coaches who helped them improve their skills. Magnus Blårand was once again a consistent presence throughout the week—highly appreciated! We also had guest coaches, including National Team Head Coach Ulf Lundberg (an incredible inspiration for both parents and students to have the national coach join us!), college coach Peter Elander from Ohio, former star player Daniel Grillfors, and former SDHL coach Heini Lundin. Skating technique sessions were led by Nina Nässén.
For the first time ever, we managed to host a school with approximately 260 students. WOW is the word! We had fantastic coaches who went above and beyond for every single student (of course!). Several trainers stayed with us for multiple days, including Sara Ridderlund and Magnus Blårand. Skating sessions were led by Nina Nässén, and we welcomed guest coaches such as college coach Peter Elander, Heini Lundin, and Jim Brithén. Off-ice training featured various instructors, including CrossFit from Halmstad, wrestling sessions with Moa and Olivia, and running technique with Maria Mossberg. These activities were incredibly popular among all participants!
We were once again able to host the school in beautiful Halmstad, this time mostly as a day camp due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these limitations, the camp ran incredibly smoothly throughout the week! We had outstanding guest coaches, including Joakim Engström (Head Coach, HV71 Women, SDHL), Heini Lundin (Head Coach, Göteborg Women, SDHL), Sara Ridderlund (Project Manager, Stockholm Ice Hockey Association), Tim Brithén (Coach for Skåne TV-Pucken team born in 2007 and Jonstorp Men’s Division 2 team), and Oskar Bondesson (Youth Coach). Popular off-ice training sessions included wrestling and boxing, along with challenging CrossFit workouts provided by CrossFit Halmstad.
Unfortunately, it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Peter Elander stopped by to inspire the girls, bringing a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm. We also had Ulf Hall, a hockey consultant for the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation, who conducted two excellent goal-scoring training sessions. A new guest coach, Sara Ridderlund (now Sports Director in Nyköping), joined us for two days and worked closely with the girls, leaving a strong impression. Rebecca Höglund, who served as an on-ice leader this year, also held training sessions with all groups, which were highly appreciated. Mikael Melander made his debut as a goalie coach, and his sessions received great feedback from the participants. As always, we included intense off-ice training like boxing and wrestling, along with hockey-specific workouts led by CrossFit Ängelholm. Overall, it was a fantastic week that the girls thoroughly enjoyed and found inspiring.
We welcomed back several dedicated coaches passionate about helping girls excel in hockey. College coach and former National Team coach Peter Elander was, as always, a source of joy and expertise. Tim Brithén, head coach of Helsingborg HC’s A-Team, led two days of technical training. Uffe Hall, a hockey consultant from the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation, worked on shooting techniques with the players, while one of our most experienced on-ice leaders, Camilla Sjöholm, conducted sessions with the girls. Additionally, Rune Johansson shared his extensive knowledge with the group. Christian ”Lillen” Yngve focused on the goalkeepers, training them on both small and full-sized rinks. We also had the privilege of welcoming Moa Nygren, a player on the national team radar, who introduced the girls to wrestling. Hockey-specific fitness sessions, led by Ängelholm native Anton Jonkman, were as challenging and well-received as ever!
Several of the most accomplished coaches returned to the school once again to share their hockey expertise. Among them were Peter Elander (now coaching at Ohio State University) and Niclas Högberg (now head coach of Kungsbacka’s A-Team). We also welcomed Tim Brithén, current head coach of Helsingborg’s A-Team, along with Ola Böös, a youth coach at Rögle. All of them are exceptional coaches, known for their attentiveness and precision. Christian “Lillen” Yngve also returned for the fifth consecutive year, taking excellent care of the goaltenders. For the first time, we had visits from new off-ice coaches. Anton and Lisa Jonkman from CrossFit Ängelholm kicked off the week with a hockey fitness session. Additionally, national team wrestler Therese “Tess” Persson from Helsingborg led a highly appreciated wrestling class for the girls.
The school once again welcomed Peter Elander from the University of North Dakota’s college team (formerly head coach of the Swedish Women’s National Team). Peter led on-ice sessions alongside Riikka Välilä from the Finnish Women’s National Team (and an inductee into the IIHF Hall of Fame), Niclas Högberg, former Swedish Women’s National Team coach, and Tenny Svensson from Rögle’s youth program. Christian “Lillen” Yngve returned for the fourth consecutive year as a goaltending coach, working with the players for four days. In the lecture room, we were joined by former national soccer goalkeeper Caroline Jönsson, who is now a sports psychologist, providing an inspiring and educational session for the participants.
The school was once again visited by Stefan Bergqvist, who led on-ice sessions with the players. Other guest coaches included Peter Elander from the University of North Dakota’s college team (former head coach of the Swedish Women’s National Team), Ola Böös, and Tenny Svensson from Rögle’s youth program. Additionally, Harry Rosenholtz (former college coach in the U.S., now a college agent) and Mikael Gävstedt conducted on-ice sessions. Christian “Lillen” Yngve also returned for the third consecutive year, serving as the goaltending coach over three days.
The school was visited by the legendary Jonas Bergqvist, who shared with the girls the story of how he achieved such success in his career. His brother, Stefan Bergqvist, who is currently the junior national team coach, also made an appearance. Stefan led the morning sessions on one of the days, and he had been Maria’s coach at the hockey gymnasium from 1995 to 1998. The current head coach of the Swedish Women’s National Team, Leif Boork, conducted a theory session with the girls, while former head coach Niclas Högberg worked with the players on the ice during several on-ice sessions throughout the week. Christian “Lillen” Yngve returned as the highly praised goaltending coach for two days.
Three Rögle profiles visited the school: Andreas Lilja, Mattias Tjärnqvist, and Victor Lindgren. They stayed for a Q&A session and signed autographs for those who wanted them. Once again, the head coach of the Swedish Women’s National Team, Niclas Högberg, attended and stayed for most of the week, holding both on-ice and theory sessions. Christian ”Lillen” Yngve was also present for two days as the goaltending coach.
The school was visited by national team coach Niclas Högberg, who led both theory and on-ice sessions. Janne Ericson from Rögle worked on skating techniques with the girls. They also received boxing and wrestling training from highly experienced coaches.
We were once again visited by Mikael Johansson and Oscar Hedman (Frölunda). Additionally, we had the honor of welcoming national team coach Niclas Högberg, national team goaltending coach Anders Palm, and national team captain Erika Holst, who captained the team in both 2010 and 2011.
Mikael Johansson (Frölunda) visited the school.
Frölunda players Mikael Johansson and (once again) Fredrik Pettersson visited the school.
Joel Lundqvist and Fredrik Pettersson (Frölunda) visited the school.
The guests were Henrik Lundqvist, Tommy Salo, Ronnie Sundin, and Anton Axelsson.
